Laser Ulsters, RNIYC
Second event of the ILA season! The Bcademy was once more on the road to the north of Ireland. The RNIYC welcomed warmly all sailors and 5 races were sailed over the 2 days. I returned to the class after 2 seasons of total absence and must say really enjoyed the event. 3 races were sailed in a shifty and gusty 8-12 kts on saturday. Sunday saw two very windy races with the final one pretty much a survival challenge for the majority of the fleet. In the 4.7, it was an all Cork affair with Seafra Guilfoyle tightening his grip on the season securing a 3rd win after the Munsters and the youth nationals. Cian Byrne continued his progress and took the second place overall with a couple of smart moves. Bcademy member Tadgh Donnelly has his moments but settled with 6th overall. In the radial, Tiffany Brien, former Olympic campaigner retained her title fending off challenges from ISAF YW rep Philip Doran. Bcademy sailors had mixed fortunes: Mark Condy sailed well on the first day earning him 8th overall, one ahead of Colm O regan. The girls were further back in the late teens having found the going difficult. the 44 boats std fleet was for once the most competitive with a mix of campaigners, fast old boys and a few former hot shots returning. favourite James Espey took an early lead on the first day he maintained in the breeze. But it was not plain sailing for James as he had to fend off challenges from his brother Bob (winner of race 2), Chris Penney ( winner of race 5) and I (winner of race 3 and well in it before I broke my boom-race 4). I eventuall finished 7th overall for me return to the class having managed to finish race 4 at "snail pace"
A great event! |
Sophie Browne comfirms at Connaughts!
Sophie continued on her good form winning a very windy first provincial in Galway. She edged out Robert Dicksson who will be very happy with a podium finish forhis first event in the seniors. Daire Cournane completed the podium. In the Juniors, it was also a girl victory with Issy Delamer dominating the breeze and her opposition. Kate Lyttle and Scott O Sullivan completed the podium. |
The wait is over for Adam Hyland
Some would say Adam's win at the Leinsters was a surprise! Not really if we consider he had been scoring consistently pretty high but his eagerness on the start line had costed him so many OCS and BFDs. Any way it was his turn to add his name on one of the trophies by just about edging out Sean Waddilove and Robert Dickson. Robert now takes the lead on the ranking. In the juniors, Favourite Ronan Cournane got back on form beating Kate Lyttle (who is taking the lead on the ranking) and new comer Philip McDowell. |

The back scene of an Olympic campaign...
Two laser boys, Ronan Cull and Chris Penney and a 470 partnership ( Barry McCartin and myself) declared interest in seeking Olympic selection being part of the 14 Irish boats looking for the couple of coveted places... Not part of the official ISA olympic squad and with no official support, we went on tour in Holland, then UK after the dream.
Currently in Weymouth we are preparing ourselves to compete at sail4Gold. After we return, our 4 weeks story will pop in here! Behind the scene of an unsupported campaign! Tough, fun and full of passion for our sport! |
