Winter Gossip... The oppies in Baltimore, Frosbite in KYC, Bcademy, TCS ltd...

New Trailer in Ireland for TCS

The new trailer has finally arrived thanks to Tom Mappleback from Curradinghy who picked it up for me in the UK. It was designed to take my RIB and 6 lasers, but as the barres are adjustable it would also take two 470s and with a slight modification 8 oppies as well. First trip will be with the Bcademy to Europe.

Optimist tails... Baltimore!

Baltimore replaced Schull very successfully. The IODAI camp was led by Soren, from Denmark and the usual team worked with the national squad. Burcu and I worked a lot on boat handling, speed and starts before each days we joined up with the massive fleet for a race. with 140 kids, it was once more a success showing that Ireland is still very active and helping to progress young sailors into the sport. The clinic was not fully orientated towards results but more towards coaching and skills. However, the league was used to shake groups around and expose all sailors to the coaches pannel. The national squad was also put to the test on the final race and a top 16 was required to retain their place for the final coaching day. That element of pressure fell nice within the trials preparation program.

After 5 races, overall, Sophie Browne would have been a clear winner of the league followed by Peter McCann and Sean Waddilove. First none national squad would have been the ever improving and entusiatic Scott Levie (9th). First junior and best improver of the clinic would have been Howth sailor Ewan Mahon (13th). More importnatly, a staggering 106 sailors sailed in the main fleetraces showing once more the depth in our fleet.

The succes of the clinic was of course due to the dedication of the coaching team combining foreign expertise with Irish knowledge. It was also the work of Aidan Staunton who was on the bridge every day ensuring all was going to plan. Thanks to Aidan and his team!

B-cademy... 2011 tour about to get underway!

The Bcademy is now about to leave Ireland to go on their european tour. 33 days of sailing and competing against the best sailors in Europe. Clara Hynes, Colm regan and Mark Condy will be joined by Georgina Corbett and Tadgh Donnelly and they are the B-Cademy 2011. The 5 sailors will undertake the strong program and hope to bring all what they will learn to a successful youth nationals in May. You will be able to follow their progress on the news of the website.

Curradinghy Racing team 2011... the new optimist team

I have joined forces with Tom Mapplebeck and Curradinghy to propose an attractive alternative to the various teams around. Curradinghy Racing has created a new racing team and I will be leading the coaching aspect of the initiative. After applications, 6 sailors have been retained for 2011 and are now Curradinghy Racing Team IRL.Tthe same is happening in the UK. each sailors will receive a brand new Nautivela optimist with all the best specs and will have preferential treatment in order to join the Curradinghy-Nautivela training-racing program.. The lucky sailors are Sean Gambier Ross ( KYC), Sean Waddilove ( SSC), Jil McGinley (RCYC), Harry Whitaker (RCYC), Eoin Lyden (RCYC) and Cliodna Ni Suilebhean ( KYC). The program 2011 has pretty much been set and here is the flyer.

Kinsale YC frosbite... successful laser series concludes

KInsale frosbite was once more a success and yours truly even managed a few races towards the end of the series! The laser 4.7 class saw indecison right up to the end with Dara O Shea edging Cian Byrne on the final race of the series. in the radial class, the first half of the series was dominated by former B-Cademy sailor Eoin Keller before I dominated the second half. But both of us missed too many weekend to challenge the leaders and Eoghan Cudmore's consistency just about took former Bcademy sailor Sean Murphy out of contention for the cup! Colm O regan completed the podium. Top lady was Katie Gambier Ross. the standard class was dominated by Master Rob Howe.

In action for my first race back in lasers. Thanks to Barry for letting me use his boat. Photo courtesy of www.cubeimages.com
