News- Optimist trials 2010

Regatta review and teams program

The trials 2010 were going to be tough... the standard was high and various training groups could not wait to validate all the work done in the winter... And they were!!!

the 13 races series gave very light air (which should be a great prepration for Poland), joys and tears... the usual receipe! The royal Cork YC was very dominant ("at both ends" as U12 high spirited Jamie Tingle pointed out) securing many of the coveted team places.

The anticipated mano a mano between the former junior champion Peter McCann and the very dominant senior Seafra Guilfoyle definitely happened and the pair scored one of the lowest score for a trials top 2 with Peter on 18 points (amazingly discarding a 3rd) and Seafra on 25 points (paying his slow start and an early bfd score). Both will be our best chances at the upcoming Europeans. the third and fourth spot were well fought for and eventually former trial winner Patrick Crosbie managed to overcome the light air ( we all know Patrick's real strengh is in the breeze :-) ) and the opposition to take 3rd ahead of Sean Donnelly. John Durcan and Freshly returned from Injury Sean Gambier Ross could not close the gap on the final day but their solid series gives good promises of a good show in France as they will be the team leaders to catch honours at the french open. In the girls, Sophie Browne was never really worried and she took the first available spot in 13th overall leading the girls from day 1. Jil Mc Ginley and Erica Ruigrok completed the Europeans team after progressively building a sufficient gap with the other contenders... It is in the french open group that things stayed alive up to the final race and it was to be two U12 Megan parker and Niamh Henry who eventually took the two coveted places leaving Cliodhna O Regan and Louise Magowan only a few points off... Eventually, John Durcan, Sean Gambier Ross, Daire Cournane, Philip Brownlow, Harry Whittaker, Adam Hyland, Eoin Lyden, Sandy Aplin, Megan Parker and Niamh Henry will fly to France in July.

The sailors will have very little time to digest their sucess as the team will be meeting at the weekend to launch their preparation towards the summer.
